This research is aimed to presume the original clay of the earthenware of Gaya in western Gyeongnam province. To compare the character of the earthenware, porosity and water absorption were measured, and DTA, XRD, XRF and chemical composition analysis were performed. Microstructures were observed by metallurgical microscope and SEM. The results showed that all of the earthenware were similar chemical composition and their firing temperatures were in the range of 1250 - 1300℃ under reducing atmosphere. Red fired clay was mainly used to make earthenware.
