(A) study on the horizon entrance style stone chamber in the upper Nakdong River

This study was initiated from a perspective that various types of horizon entrance style stone chambers were built from the early stage that is contrasted to a general perspective that the horizon entrance style stone chamber was developed by combining the stone chamber structure with additional burial idea of the corridor style stone chamber in studying the horizon entrance style stone chamber in Yeungnam region. The study focused on the upper Nakdong river area which has various types of stone chamber tombs. The study is divided into five chapters. In chapter Ⅱ the study classified the horizon entrance style stone chamber in the upper Nakdong river into three types on the basis of plane form and coffin-stand structure first and then each types was further classified according to the tomb's wall structure and entrance structure. The study also mentioned the distribution aspect of each type in the Nakdong river system. In chapter Ⅲ the study examined the change of each type on the basis of the Uiseong-type pottery chronology and late Silla pottery chronology. In chapter Ⅳ the study examined a fact that there is a distinct characteristics in the horizon entrance style stone chamber in the upper Nakdong according to the river system first. Then the study also showed a fact that the horizon entrance style stone chamber with distinct local characteristics which was developed in the upper Nakdong river in the early 6th century was disseminated to the Han river Hamgyeong-Do Gangwon-Do areas in the late 6th century. This fact was supposedly resulted from several factors. That is the upper Nakdong river was located in northern frontier of Silla and there were much military activities and fortress buildings in these areas. A new settlement policy initiated by Silla government was also an important factors. Lastly in chapter Ⅴ the study also revealed a fact that the social rank of buried persons in the tomb in the 6th century in Uiseong area may be divided into 3 groups by the arrangement of tombs internal structure of the tombs and burial goods. GroupⅠis a ruling class that built the wooden chamber with stone mound and corridor style stone chamber. Group Ⅱ is a middle class that built the stone chamber and horizon entrance style stone chamber and consist of wealthy farmers and iron smiths. Group Ⅲ is a commoner class that built stone chamber and horizon entrance style stone chamber.
