초록(영문)

The styles of artifacts reflect various social contexts when they actually existed. Therefore one could find out the characteristics and aspects of change in the corresponding society if one analyzed the styles of artifacts diachronically. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure and transformation of Kyungsan and Daegu areas the then province of Silla Dynasty through the pottery styles of the 5th to 6th century Kyungsan and Daegu areas in the Period of the Three States. In order to do this this study questioned whether the 'regional pottery style' that we have defined vaguely actually existed in Youngnam area in the Period of the Three States. It would be hard to explain the regional pottery style in this period simply with its cultural aspects because it also had economic and political characteristics. Therefore the scope that the sphere of common styles of pottery in each region was distributed was a very important part to figure out the characteristics of the corresponding local polity. Next it attempted to find out the relationship among three regions diachronically by comparing Silla style pottery corresponding to the capital of Silla Dynasty to the pottery of Kyungsan and Daegu areas that were the regions of Silla Dynasty and adjacent geographically to each other. In order to approach these problems it would be necessary to make a preliminary study on the production-distribution system of pottery by analyzing the pottery styles of each tumulus group in Kyungsan and Daegu areas in detail. These were basic but crucial works in this study; however there were some problems because it would be hard to suggest the foundation of detailed analysis and similarity due to the large amount of potteries. In order to minimize these problems this study used an effective MDS (multi-dimensional scaling) in the similarity comparison of artifacts at the time of analyzing the types of potteries. From the analysis results it has been found that there were no “regional styles” that included the entire regions in the pottery of Kyungsan and Daegu areas and there were “sub-regional styles” based on district. The reason that the sub-regional styles were so noticeable in each district of Kyungsan and Daegu areas in the 5th to 6th century was that the uniqueness of the relevant areas was strong. With regards to the sub-regional styles of pottery there was one more important thing - it would be possible to divide four districts and three districts for each Kyungsan and Daegu area according to the styles of pottery; however it did not mean that the sub-regional styles of pottery were established in all districts. If then what made them separate the districts with sub-regional styles from those without? First of all the reasons that the sub-regional styles of pottery were established could be varied in accordance with the circumstances that specific districts had. In case of Kyungsan and Daegu areas in this study there could be three reasons that they had such sub-regional styles. First as there was a large demand on potteries the subsequent production system of potteries became organized so that a certain styles of potteries were established. Imdang district of Kyungsan area could be an example for this. Second new types of pottery styles were established due to the influence of neighboring regional pottery styles. Jain district of Kyungsan area and Western district of Daegu area belonged to this case. Third there was a case that did not imitate the Silla style pottery and maintained their own tradition of manufacturing potteries and had their unique pottery styles. Chilgok district of Daegu area belonged to this case. Meanwhile the potteries from Dalsung district of Daegu area Jinryang district and Bulro district of Kyungsan area did not have the sub-regional styles and strongly imitated the Silla style pottery because it reflected their special relationship with the central Silla Dynasty. Namely from the tumulus at Dalsung building group this group had frequent interchange with the central Silla by the dispatch of lords of a castle from Silla. And the tumulus at Sinsang-ri building group had many wooden chamber tomb lined with stones which was identical to the central Silla. And the tumulus at Bulro-dong building group was probably a strategic point that was used in the submission of Daegu by Kyungju in terms of geographical position even if it would not be sure. The potteries of Kyungsan and Daegu areas faithfully imitated the Silla pottery styles; therefore it would be difficult to distinguish their stylistic differences among the three regions. However after comparing and analyzing Silla pottery Kyungsan pottery and Daegu pottery Kyungsan pottery and Daegu pottery were distinguished from each other up to the fourth quarter of the 5th century in terms of their style even if they were geographically adjacent to each other and the unity of pottery styles was established by the central Silla in the early 6th century. Besides even in case that the potteries were transferred from Kyungsan area to Daegu area they did not pass the upper rank settlement group but pass the lower rank settlement group.
