Recently thear chaeological study of Ho-nam province has accumulated consider able achievement in the process of variou sex aminations of the surface of earth and excavations of remains, and the real aspects of ancient culture of the area have been revealed on eafter another. However, it cannot be denied that a study of ancient culture of Ho-nam province through archaeological dat a is still at in complete st ag e ex cept th e r egion of the Young- san River (榮山江) valley . Above all, many stone-lined tombs with vertical digging unearthed in the mountainous area of eastern Ho-nam provinceremain to be studied. The stone- lined tombs have been found to cluster in the northea stern area centerin garound Teokyu Mount ain (德裕山) such as Moo-ju (茂朱),Chin-an (鎭安), and Chang-su (長水) County , in thear eaneighb oring Mount Chiri(智異山) such as Nam-won (南原) City , Kok-sung (谷城) and Ku-ry e (求禮)County , and in the hilly districts such as Im- il(任實) and Soon-chang (淳昌)County . Lately they are found and investigated in the cities of Koon-san (群山) and Ick-san (益山) located on the lower part of Kum River (錦江), and Soon-cheon (順川) City adjoining the lower part of Sum-jin River (蟾津江). Until now excavation of the stone-lined tomb has been executed mainly around the area of Nam River (南江), that is the eastern part of Nam-won City and it has offered significant clues for clarifying the reality and characteristics of the constructing group of the tomb. Meanwhile, the stone-lined tombs were also found to be distributed in the area around Kum River and Sum-jin River as a result of examination of surface of earth, and yet characteristic details concerning the tombs are still unknown. Furthermore, some new throngs of high tombs of middle size were found of late through examination of the surface of earth of these rivers, which gives an important clue to explicate stages of progress of the stone-lined tomb.According to the general summary of achievements in archaeological study by now, the stone-lined tomb is believed to be adopted as a main system of burial by the ruling force which had grown with its foundation in the eastern mountainous area of Ho-nam province until Paekje (百濟) advanced. And the tomb continued to develop to reach the stage of the clustered old tombs. By the way, attributes of system and remains of the tomb are closely related with those of the old tombs of Kaya (加耶), which reveals the fact that the building group grew on the basis of the culture of Kaya. It is remarkable that the ruling group developed on the basis of the culture of Kaya, not Paekje especially because the area has been recognized to belong to the sphere of Paekje culture since the age of Mahan (馬韓). It supports the students of archaeology and history of Kaya to understand the eastern area of Ho-nam province to belong generally to the sphere of Tae-Kaya.
