초록

본고는 다양한 계열의 전승이 남아 있는 백제 건국신화가 왜 이와 같은 형태로 남게 되었고, ‘무엇을’ 말하려고 했던 것인지를 밝히기 위해 이루어졌다. 유사한 서사구조를 지니고 있는 대가야 건국신화와의 비교를 통해 백제 건국신화의 특징을 보다 명료하게 드러낼 수 있을 것이다. 백제의 건국신화는 크게 주몽을 시조의 生父로 인정하는 친고구려적인 온조-도모 계열과, 주몽을 부정하고 북부여 해부루왕계와의 혈연을 강조하는 비류-구태 계열로 나눌 수 있다. 어느 쪽이라도 혈연상의 接點이 될 수 있는 소서노에게는 거의 비중을 두지 않았다. 위대한 여성이 두 명의 시조왕을 낳았다는 서사구조의 골격은 백제와 대가야의 건국신화가 서로 닮아 있다. 그러나 대가야의 정견모주는 산신이 되고 두 아들의 이름을 통한 ‘형제’ 의식이 강했던 반면, 백제의 소서노는 신화에서 거의 무시되었고 비류-온조의 갈등은 어느 한쪽의 죽음을 요청할 정도로 격렬한 것이었다. 이와 같은 별개의 신화가 이루어진 배경은 백제가 고대국가로의 사회 통합을 이루는 과정에서 건국의 영웅들 가운데 한 사람을 시조신으로서 신격화하지 않고, 외부로부터 또다른 시조신격을 찾았기 때문인 것으로 보았다. 이러한 성격의 시조신은 대외적 경쟁 관계 때문에 이루어진 것으로, 원만한 사회 통합을 이루기에는 다소 무리가 있다. 따라서 성읍에 근거한 세력은 현명함을 갖춘 온조왕을, 해양세력은 과감한 결단력을 지닌 비류왕을 시조왕으로 바라보는 별개의 시조전승을 유지하게 된 것이다.

초록(영문)

The birth myth of Baekjae can be devided into two ranges. One is the Onjo-Domo : pro-Koguyeo range, the other is the Biryoo-Gootae : anti-Koguryeo range. One is the castle town society and the other is the ocean society. Both of them are ignore their mother's line which can be the point of contact between them. The birth myth of two natins, Baekjae and Daegaya have the same the motif of 'great mother brought into being two kings'. But the characters of the mother and sons are much different. Jeonggyeonmojoo(the mother) of Daegaya became the godess of the mountain gaya, her sons and their descendents have very big connectedness in their names. Otherwise Soseono(the mother) of Baekjae had been ignored. her sons may start the complications of brothers which request the death of one side. The external founder god of the ancient nation Baekjae is the background of the formation of these two separate myth. The Great Kings of Baekjae deify the god and godess of the old country Booyeo and Koguryeo. instead of deifying the heroes and heroin of the birth of Baekjae. So the castle town society select Onjo of wisdom as their founder, in the same breath the ocean society select Biryoo of decision. At last their founder transmission make separations.
